Cookie Policy
The short version: we use a small number of cookies to keep you logged in, keep the site secure, remember your preferences, and understand what's working. We don't use cookies to sell your data or follow you around the internet with ads.
1. What cookies are
Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website or use an app. They help us remember things about your visit, like keeping you signed in, so the experience works smoothly the next time you come back.
We also use a few similar technologies (such as local storage, web beacons and device identifiers). For simplicity, this policy refers to all of them as “cookies” unless we say otherwise.
This Cookie Policy sits alongside our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your personal information more broadly.
2. The cookies we use
Essential cookies, always on. These are needed for the site and app to work. You can't switch them off without affecting core functionality.
- Authentication, keeping you signed in to your account
- Security, protecting against fraud and abuse
- Session management, remembering where you are in a flow
Analytics cookies, optional. These help us understand how people use DateSmarter so we can improve it.
- Google Analytics, how the site is used, at an aggregate level
- Internal analytics, which features are used and how they perform
Preference cookies, optional. These remember your settings so you don't have to set them again.
- Language preference
- Theme (light / dark mode)
- Notification preferences
Marketing cookies, not currently used. We do not currently use advertising or marketing cookies. If that ever changes, we'll update this policy and ask for your consent first.
3. Other technologies we use
Web beacons (pixels). Small, transparent images used in some emails to help us understand whether a message was opened. You can limit these in your email settings.
Local storage. Similar to cookies, but able to hold a little more data. We use it to help the app and site function. You can clear it through your browser settings.
Device identifiers. Unique IDs assigned to mobile devices, used for analytics and authentication. You can reset these in your device settings (iOS: Reset Advertising ID; Android: Reset Advertising ID).
4. Third-party cookies
A small number of trusted partners may set cookies to provide their services to us:
- Google Analytics, usage analytics. You can opt out using Google's browser add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
- AWS, cloud infrastructure, covered by AWS's own privacy terms.
We do not share data with advertising networks, and we do not sell your data to third parties.
5. How to control cookies
You're always in control. Most browsers let you block all cookies, block third-party cookies, delete cookies after each session, or warn you before a cookie is stored.
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy → Cookies
- Firefox: Settings → Privacy → Cookies
- Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Cookies
- Edge: Settings → Privacy → Cookies
In the app, you can manage optional cookies under Settings → Privacy → Cookie Preferences. On the website, you can use the cookie banner or the footer link.
Heads up: turning off some cookies may limit features like staying logged in, remembering your preferences, or analytics.
6. Consent (EU / UK visitors)
If you're in the EU or UK, we follow the ePrivacy Directive. You'll see a cookie banner on your first visit, essential cookies are on by default, and you can accept or reject non-essential cookies. You can change your choice at any time.
7. Changes and contact
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time. When we do, we'll change the “Last updated” date above and, for material changes, let you know in the app or on the site.
