Discovery
How you find people, how liking works, and what fit is telling you. 7 articles.
A guide to DateSmarter/Discovery
Discovery is where you find people. If you only read one article here, read Smart Discover, because it is the part that works differently to other apps.
1Discovery settings+
Discovery settings control who you see. Open your profile, then Settings → Discovery.
- Distance, how far away people can be.
- Age range, the ages you want to see.
- Show me, who you are interested in seeing.
Changes apply straight away. If you are seeing very few people, widening distance usually helps more than widening age.
2How liking works+
When a profile interests you, like it. If they like you back, you match and a chat opens.
If you are not interested, skip. Skipping is not a judgement and the other person is never told.
Liking something specific, a photo or an answer, gives the other person something to reply to. A like with a reason attached gets a much better response than a bare like.
3Review skipped profiles+
Changed your mind straight after skipping someone? You can go back and look again.
How many you can review depends on your plan. On a free account this is limited, and on a subscription you get more.
4Smart Discover+
Most apps make you set filters and then scroll. Smart Discover lets you say what you are actually after in your own words, and shows you people who match that description.
- Open Smart Discover.
- Describe what you are looking for, for example, someone who reads and does not mind an early morning.
- Look through the people it brings back.
Why it helps
Filters are good at facts and bad at everything else. Age and distance are facts. What someone is actually like is not. Describing it in a sentence gets you closer than a set of sliders.
Smart Discover works alongside normal browsing, it does not replace it. Your distance and age settings still apply.
5What does fit mean?+
On some profiles you will see an indication of How well you fit. It is a rough guide to how closely someone lines up with what you have said you are looking for.
It is a starting point, not a verdict. A high number does not mean you will get on, and a lower one does not mean you will not. Plenty of good conversations start with someone you would not have picked from a list.
We show you what it is based on rather than asking you to trust a number. If it is not useful to you, ignore it.
6Can I search for a specific person?+
No, and that is deliberate. You cannot search DateSmarter by name, phone number or email.
It means nobody can look you up here, which protects you as much as anyone else. If someone is bothering you, you can block or report them.
7How do I message someone?+
You need to match first. When you both like each other a chat opens automatically, and either of you can start.
If you are staring at an empty chat, that is what the chat coach is for.
Cannot find what you need? Send us a message and a real person will read it.
