A guide to DateSmarter/Getting started
New here? Work through these in order and you will have a finished profile in about ten minutes. If you already have an account, skip to DateSmarter overview for a tour of the app.
1Create a DateSmarter account+
You can sign up with your email address, or with an existing Apple or Google account.
- Download DateSmarter from the App Store or Google Play.
- Open the app and choose how you would like to sign up.
- Enter your date of birth. You need to be 18 or over to use DateSmarter.
- Confirm your email address, then set up your profile.
One account per person. If you sign up with Apple or Google, use the same method every time you sign in, otherwise the app will treat it as a new account.
2Verify your email address+
We ask you to confirm your email so we know the account is yours, and so you can get back in if you change phones.
- Check your inbox for the message from DateSmarter.
- Enter the code from the email into the app.
- If the code has expired, request a new one.
Nothing arrived?
Check your spam or junk folder first. If it is not there, make sure the address you entered is spelled correctly and request the code again. If nothing comes through after a few minutes, get in touch.
3Set up your profile+
Your profile has one job: give someone a reason to start talking to you. Photos get you looked at. The written answers are what people actually reply to.
What to add
- Photos, a few recent ones, with your face clearly visible in the first.
- The basics, what you are looking for, where you are, and the details other people filter on.
- Icebreakers, short written answers that give someone something to ask about.
- Audio intro, optional, and it tells people more than another photo will.
You do not have to finish it in one sitting. Come back to any section later from your profile.
4DateSmarter overview+
DateSmarter has three main places, and a tab for each.
Smart Discover
Where you find people. As well as browsing, you can describe the kind of person you are looking for in your own words and see who fits.
Matches
Everyone you have matched with, and everyone who has liked you.
Chat
Where conversations happen, and where the chat coach sits. When you are not sure what to say, it offers a way forward with three options: Stuck?, Witty reply and Deep question. Every suggestion comes with a short reason, so you can see why it might work rather than taking it on trust.
Nothing is ever sent for you. Edit any suggestion, or ignore it completely. You always press send yourself.
5Changing your language settings+
DateSmarter follows your phone's language where we support it. English, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Chinese are available.
- Change the language on your device.
- Close and reopen DateSmarter.
Messages other people send you are not translated. Only the app's own wording changes.
