Profile and account settings

Open your profile and tap Edit. Change anything, in any order, as often as you like.

There are two views. Edit is where you make changes, and View shows you your profile exactly as other people see it. Check the View tab before you finish, because it is easy to write something that reads differently from the outside.

Add, remove and reorder your photos from Edit → Photos. Drag to change the order.

What works

• A clear photo of your face first, on its own.
• Recent. Within the last year or so.
• At least one where you are doing something, because it gives people a question to ask.
• No heavy filters. The person who turns up should be the person in the photos.

Photos are checked before they go live. If one is hidden, it is usually for one of these reasons.

• No face is visible, or it is not clear who the photo is of.
• It contains other people's details, or a child.
• It breaks our rules on nudity, violence or hate.
• It looks like it belongs to someone else.

Replace it with a different photo. If you think we have got it wrong, tell us and a person will look at it.

Icebreakers are short written answers on your profile. They are the single most useful thing you can add, because they are what people reply to.

Writing ones that get answered

• Be specific. A named album beats "I like music".
• Leave a door open. Give someone an obvious thing to ask about.
• Do not try to be funny in every one. One is plenty.

An audio intro is a short recording on your profile. It is optional.

It is worth doing, because a voice carries warmth and timing that a photo cannot. Keep it brief, say it once, and do not script it.

You can delete or re-record it any time from Edit.

Verification confirms your photos are actually you. Verified profiles carry a badge.

It is quick, and it matters. It tells the people you match with that you are real, and it makes the whole app harder to abuse.

Start it from Edit → Verification and follow the prompts.

Your profile shows how complete it is, and which pieces are still missing.

It is not a score to chase. It exists because incomplete profiles get fewer replies, and the missing pieces are almost always the written answers rather than the photos.

Control what DateSmarter tells you about from Settings → Notifications. New matches, new messages and likes can each be turned on or off.

If you have turned notifications off for DateSmarter at the phone level, the in-app settings will not override that. Check your device settings too.

You can sign in with your email, or with Apple or Google. Whichever you used to sign up is the one to keep using.

Signing in a different way creates a separate account rather than finding your existing one. If you think you have ended up with two, contact us and we will sort it out.

There is a feedback option in Settings, and on the chat coach suggestions themselves.

The thumbs on a suggestion are the most useful thing you can give us. They tell us when a suggestion did not sound like you, which is the only way the coach gets better at your voice.

Two different things, and the difference matters.

Pause

Hides your profile so nobody new sees you. Your matches, chats and profile stay exactly as they are, and you can come back whenever you like.

Delete

Removes your account, your profile, your matches and your chats. This cannot be undone, and starting again means starting from nothing.

Deleting your account is separate from cancelling a subscription. Cancel the subscription first, otherwise it may keep billing through the app store.
